From Certified Flight Instructor to the Flight Deck: One Pilot’s Journey from IAA to SkyWest

April 3, 2026

For many aspiring pilots, the journey to the airlines begins with a passion for flight and a commitment to continuous learning. For this SkyWest pilot and former Certified Flight Instructor at Illinois Aviation Academy (IAA), the path was shaped by mentorship, perseverance, and the rewarding experience of teaching others to fly. In this interview, Danielle Ogden reflects on her time as a CFI, how instructing helped prepare her for the airline industry, and the advice she has for students working toward their own aviation careers.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in aviation and become a pilot?

A: I wanted to make a meaningful difference. To be someone of importance, someone who mattered to those around me and someone people could look up to with real responsibility.

Q: What was your experience like as a Certified Flight Instructor at IAA, and what did you enjoy most about instructing?

A: Becoming a CFI is no easy feat. At IAA, the chief pilot office was integral in pushing both myself and my students towards success. This led me to become a Gold Seal Flight Instructor and send 13 pilots to their checkride. I especially enjoyed teaching PPL students- seeing them absorb new knowledge like sponges and watching their excitement of learning to fly was infectious.

Q: How did your time as a CFI help prepare you for the transition to the airlines?

A: Being a CFI, specifically at IAA, helped me get in the right circles. I had colleagues help me study, prep, and deep-dive into preparing for the airline interview. It was also helpful being able to give the interviewer examples of my time instructing. Experience is key!

Q: What does joining SkyWest Airlines mean to you at this stage in your career?

A: SkyWest has opened many doors for me. Being that it is the largest regional with multiple bases means more opportunities. In addition to flying, I audit on-time departures for the company — a role that led to my selection for a training video alongside United mainline and expanded responsibilities supporting future auditors and cross-department collaboration.

Q: What advice would you give to current students or CFIs working toward an airline career?

A: Two key things: don’t take breaks or gaps in training—you’ll earn more in the long run—and surround yourself with people who genuinely want to see you succeed. If those around you aren’t rooting for you, it’s time to find a better circle.
